is
proud
of its following achievements
Sponsored
basic education for hundreds of children in India (ongoing).
2004-2008
Although
education is compulsory until 14 years of age, about 40% of children
do not participate any education program in India. Many parents
do not send their children to school because of high collateral
fees, such as uniform, shoes, and other expenses, depending on
the regulation of each school. Also, many parents take into account
the loss of income, which would occur if their children went to
school instead of working.
According to HUMANITAS survey the major reasons of children not
attending school are:
- they
do not have regular birth certificate. This prevents them to
be admitted in government schools
- have
lost school seasons because their parents are (or have been
previously) irregular seasonal workers
- they
are forced to work in order to maintain themselves and their
relatives
- their
parents cannot afford to pay school fees
Children
to be sponsored are selected by HUMANITAS local units on the basis
of recommendation by teachers and neighbourhood committees. They
come from poor families and their situation is often compounded
by other factors (orphaned children, serious illness). Eligibility
is determined through a rigorous screening process involving teacher,
family and child interviews conducted by HUMANITAS local staff.
Between
2005 and 2008 EducationHUMANITAS sponsors more then 150 pupils'
formal education in India.
Successfully
implemented Monsoon School programs in India (ongoing).
2005-2008
In
June 2005 EducationHUMANITAS has lunched its "Monsoon School
Programs" in the unprivileged areas of Goa region in India.
The projects were initiated as a response to that widely diffused
phenomenon that in poor or remote areas many parents do not send
their children to school because they request their children to
work. During the Monsoon season productive activities are reduced,
so parents have no “excuse” for not allowing their
children attend classes. The program starts on 1st June and lasts
three moths. The focus of this project is to teach alphabet and
basic mathematics to illiterate children who do not attend any
formal school program.
The
classes are organized in Sequerim and Mapusa of Goa region, where
until 2008,
all together 185 children and young adults benefited the three-month
long education program. In the first year, initially
only 40 students were subscribed, but by the end of the program
the number of pupil increased to 55, as more and more families
recognized the importance of "knowledge”. This exceptional
success is greatly due to the efforts the teachers were taking
to teach the students. It also reflects the efforts that Education
HUMANITAS has been taking in funding the project.
Because
the enrolled students are from poor families, their healthy nutrition
– in the most part of the cases- usually is not assured.
Therefore EducationHUMANITAS supplied protein rich, healthy food
to students during the all duration of the program.
The Monsoon School Project is making an immense difference in
the life of our pupils, as they are now able to read and write
basic English like alphabets, few English words, they are familiar
with the numbers, they can do basic calculation like addition
and subtraction, they have learnt to write their own names. They
are now living a more hygienic and clean life as they have been
taught health related topics as well.
All
these knowledge they could have never acquired without the help
of EducationHUMANITAS. Encouraged by the grate success of the
Monsoon School Program, EducationHUMANITAS plans to continue the
programs all around the year and to extend them to other poor
areas of the region.
Successfully
implemented awareness campaign in India (ongoing).
2006-2008
School
attendance, especially in the rural and poor urban districts of
India, is low and a staggering 40% of children do not complete
primary school. Education is not seen as a priority for many Indian
families as it is considered irrelevant to they everyday life.
Parents' educational level and attitudes towards education dictate
whether or not a child will attend school.
In
closed collaboration with local organizations HUMANITAS organizes
seminars to parents to raise awareness about the importance of
formal education.
Our
seminars take place in May in the slum areas of Sinquerim district
in Goa, with the participation of local schoolteachers and EducationHUMANITAS
representatives.
Altogether
three seminars were organized with an average participation of
30 parents per section.
As
the result of EducationHUMANITAS campaign the school attendance
of this district has risen by 30%.
Successfully
promoted entrepreneur education in Eastern Europe
2004-2006
Moldova
gained independence from the Soviet Regime in 1991, but till today
could not recover from the economical disasters that the previous
regime entailed.
Poor economic performance since the country’s independence
has led to growing poverty and declining social welfare. Economic
growth has increased recently, but the Republic of Moldova remains
Europe’s poorest country.
The
need to raise living standards requires adequate support from
the international community in the form of market access, financing,
debt relief, where appropriate, coupled with continuing policy
advice. This support is indispensable to strengthen the reform
process in order to achieve sustainable growth and to reduce poverty.
In
29-30 June 2004 H.E. Mr. Marian Lupu, the Minister of Economy
of the Republic of Moldova, with the support of UNECE (United
Nation’s Economic Council for Entrepreneurship) has organized
a Training Workshop on “The Development of Entrepreneurship
and the SME Sector in the Republic of Moldova”
Education
HUMANITAS has been invited to present it’s program on entrepreneurship
education. Krisztina Takacs Floreano, founder of EducationHUMANITAS
spoke about the importance of entrepreneurship and about promoting
and supporting the creation of new enterprises.
As
a result of EducationHUMANITAS intervention the Government of
Moldova accorded a three years of Tax Exemption status for start
up companies. This will result in an estimated increase of 10
% of newly created companies.
Also it recognized the importance of entrepreneur-oriented education
and pledged to allocate more resources to this sector.
